USEFUL NUMBERS for the NORTHAMPTON AREA
Northampton General Hospital Diabetes Specialist Nurses: there is now a Northamptonshire Diabetes Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) who will help you to care for your diabetes: this will allow the Diabetes Specialist Nurses to look after people with diabetes when they are admitted to hospital. (The drop-in clinics have been discontinued and the specialist nurses are no longer available to answer the phone between noon and 1 pm).
If you have a query relating to your diabetes, contact your GP or Practice Nurse in the first instance. To refer yourself to the MDT please ring 01536 492121, leaving your name and telephone number so that they can contact you to arrange an appointment.
If you have a query specifically pertinent to NGH Diabetes Specialist Nurses, leave a message on their voicemail number: 01604 545930.
Children’s Diabetes Nurses: 01604 545517 Northampton General Hospital. The Paediatric Community Office is staffed Mondays to Fridays, office hours, for you to leave a message.
Footcare: first check if a podiatrist attends your GP’s surgery or local health clinic. If not, contact the receptionist, Podiatry Services, Battle House, Northampton General Hospital on 01604 545422. Ask for advice about applying to your local clinic.
Note that people with diabetes do not need a GP’s referral letter.
Diet: ask at your GP’s surgery or clinic if you can be referred for an appointment.
Eyes: everyone with diabetes, irrespective of age, is entitled to a free eyesight check every year with their optician.
You should also receive a free annual appointment to attend the Retinal Screening Service at a centre near you for the back of your eyes to be photographed to check for eye problems related to your diabetes. Check with the Practice Nurse at your surgery to make sure that you have been referred into the system.
Disposal of sharps. All lancets, needles, cartridges and Safe-Clip devices are classed as hazardous clinical waste and MUST, by law, be disposed of in special yellow boxes (obtainable free on prescription) and destroyed by incineration. Northampton Borough, Daventry District and South Northants Councils all provide free collection services to their clients and will collect full boxes by prior arrangement. Replacement boxes should be ordered through your surgery.
