Diabetes Open Day, 3 July 2010

The open day, held in the St Giles' Church Rooms, was well attended and obviously helpful to those attending.  Experts in their various fields answered questions and problems posed by visitors and members of their families. The tables offering help & advice were staffed by diabetes physicians, specialist diabetes nurses, podiatrists, the specialist diabetes dietitian & the retinal screening team.

At other tables, books on diabetes were on sale, information on the parent support group was available and refreshments were served.

A measure of the success of the event was indicated by the fact that at least two people, who had been paying £25 for chiropody, were made aware that free of charge podiatry services are available to them under the NHS via their GPs. Another couple of people were previously quite unaware that they are entitled to free retinal screening.

The dietitian's table was an obvious draw: often, throughout the morning, there were queues of people wanting her help & advice.

All in all, it was a valuable job, very well done.
